GREEN DAY @ VERIZON WIRELESS AMPHITHEATRE

In homage and farewell to the summer, AFI and Green Day preformed at Verizon Wireless Amphitheater Tuesday, August 31st. The night was truly a California punk-pride affair with zippers, plaid, flannel and tight jeans en mass. The fragrant night air smelled like a pot dispensary up in flames. I’m almost ashamed to admit that despite growing up in the OC, I had never once been to the Verizon Amphitheater nor seen Green Day live. This being the case, I wasn’t quite sure what to expect; just like everybody else in high school, I’d bought their CDs and watched MTV clips of overpopulated concerts and stage diving escapades. Surprisingly, in a nut shell, Green Day rocked. The vocals and instruments, tempo and beat were on point and studio quality. Billie Joe Armstrong demonstrated the energy of an angst-ful teenager on nicotine pills; ranting and raging his California pride and nominating himself for Governor. One eager fan after another was lifted up for a suspenseful, triumphant and perfectly orchestrated stage dive, giving the pack a laugh and a roar. The crowd was hooked, waiving their arms, stomping their feet and hands every which way Billie told us to. The only lull in energy came when Billie gripped and quipped about the dire state of politics in his near and dear home state, at which point the mob tuned out as if on commercial break. They might cheer for him as Governor later, but let him entertain us now! All and all, the show was a quick and easy shot of fun, inclusion and genuine Golden State Pride. Not only would I see them again, I might even give Billie my vote.

JOHN MAYER @ VERIZON WIRELESS AMPHITHEATRE
photographer: Lily Stein / writer: Alex Magnall
If you happened to be one of the people who ventured out to the Verizon Amphitheater on Tuesday night August 24, you experienced a phenomenal concert in perfect weather. John Mayer opened the concert with an awesome guitar solo that led into "Chest Fever". The set list had many of his hit songs including "Heartbreak Warfare", "Gravity", "Half of My Heart" and “Waiting on the World to Change”. “Don’t Stop Believing” was a crowd favorite. Mayer’s acoustic solo of “Don’t Think Twice, It’s All Right” in his encore had the crowd singing. Although he performed many of his most popular hits, Mayer added his own twist to them by including guitar solos, drum solos, and saxophone solos to every song. Seeing Mayer live, let us in the audience enjoy his old school rock touch which he incorporated into his modern songs, providing a pleasant and enjoyable musical evening.

STING FEATURING ROYAL PHILHARMONIC ORCHESTRA @ VERIZON WIRELESS AMPHITHEATRE
photographer: Lily Stein / writer: Marvin Johnson
Verizon Wireless Amphitheater gave, what appeared to be a sold out OC crowd a rare treat with Sting featuring the Royal London Philharmonic. Sting is a legendary songwriter and performer whose has such a library of hits, that any Sting fan would have known every word of the nearly three hour performance. Sting did a great job with a set that featured three encores and a backing band of over thirty orchestra musicians. The Symphonicity Tour is a winning concept. Treating Sting fans to a plethora of Police and Sting's favorites plus incredible sounding instruments and the opportunity to buy new material seems to be a well thought out plan. Even the name Symphonicity plays off the very famous Police Synchronicity Tour.Sting kicked off the night with Lose My Faith, Englishman in New York then Every Little Thing She Does. There was a rendition of Roxanne on what appeared to be a Ukulele. One great thing about Sting live is that he changes the tempo and sound of his songs so that they feel new each time he comes around to sing them. The production of the show was a classy, simple yet elegant projection of light on a simple draped red curtain back drop. There were three visual boxes that hung above the stage showed videos and visual designs. He did When We Dance and then Russians Love Their Children Too at a moment when it actually seemed to get colder in the outdoor Irvine Amphitheater. Sting's performance was a very intimate story telling style which was well received. Some highlights of the performance included an upbeat Next to You, which took the crowd of 17,000 into intermission and a rendition of Tomorrow We'll See which the fans learned Sting had actually written the about a male prostitute. King of Pain came later and got the people on their feet. I would say it was possibly one of the best performances at Verizon this year.

CARNEY @ TROUBADOUR
photographer: Megan Strouse / writer: Brian Murphy
A copious mix of The Doors meets Radiohead, Carney is a band that gets lost in its on melodic sound. Lead singer Reeve Carney, gets so involved in his music that you would think he’s in some kind of Rock ‘n’ Roll induced trance. Aside from having great vocals, Reeve’s handles the guitar as if it was a natural extension of his body. While either playing on the floor, or jumping up and down in a repetitive and sporadic manner, Reeves is extremely virtuosic with the guitar. One of the best things about Carney is that they are not an obvious rip-off of other bands. Although they do have obvious and admitted influences such as The Beatles, Jimi Hendrix and Led Zeppelin, Carney’s sound is very independent and stands on its own. Watching Carney perform at The Troubadour (they play there regularly) was the perfect venue for their look and genre of music. The building, located in West Hollywood provides the perfect backdrop for the bands throwback sound.

LAKERS VS. JAZZ @ HONDA CENTER
photographer: Chris Victorio
The classic match up of Lakers vs. Jazz took place at the Honda Center October 7th for the team's first pre-season preview of what looks to be an exciting year. Lakers led early in the first quarter 26 to 19 and ended the half ahead 42-40. Although shaking off some rust from the off-season and the absence of Andrew Bynum from the line-up due to an injury mid-season last year, the Bynum-Bryant duo looked impressive. Lakers Center Pau Gasol lead in points in the first quarter with only five minutes of play. Jazz picked up steam and gained the lead in third quarter and proved to be too much for the Lakers to overcome ending 99-90 Utah. Lakers are a team whose roster is filled with talent, putting all the ingredients together has always been the key to their success. With Bynum healthy and maturing into what may be his finest year yet, look for the Lakers to give a run for the playoffs and beyond.
